Why Stop Loss Placement Defines Your Trading
A stop loss is not just a defensive tool, it is the foundation of every trade. Without a defined stop loss, you have no way to calculate risk, R:R ratio or position size.
Three Methods of Stop Loss Placement
- Structure-based, below a swing low (for longs) or above a swing high (for shorts). Most reliable method.
- ATR-based, place stop at 1.0-1.5× the Average True Range from entry.
- Fixed percentage, risk exactly 1% of account and adjust lot size to match.
Common Stop Loss Mistakes
- Placing stops at obvious round numbers
- Moving stops further away after entry
- Not using a stop loss at all
- Placing stops too tight within normal intraday noise
